If you own a wake boat on this chain, you've probably read the last tab with some frustration. Our lakes are small. No amount of good intention changes their dimensions.
But these lakes can't support enhanced-wake surfing is not the same statement as your boat doesn't belong here. Those two get collapsed together constantly in this debate, and they shouldn't be.
Your boat without ballast is just a boat
Empty the tanks, stay off surf mode, and your boat is an ordinary inboard. Cruise it, pull a tube, pull a skier, take the family out at sunset. The research supports this distinction directly rather than as a courtesy — the University of Minnesota tested wake boats in both modes and issued different recommendations for each:
Any powerboat, cruising or planing
10 ft or greater
Wake boats, while surfing
20 ft or greater
Note what that means here. Big Lake's mean depth is 17 feet and Church Pine's is 23. Out of surf mode, your boat comfortably satisfies the researchers' own recommendation across our chain. The constraint that makes surfing difficult here is room, not depth — and room isn't a factor at all for ordinary operation.
This isn't a distinction we invented. Vermont — which has the most restrictive wake sports rules in the country — treats an unballasted wake boat as an ordinary boat: if the ballast isn't filled, only the standard 200-foot shoreline offset applies rather than the 500-foot wakesports requirement. Wisconsin town ordinances have generally been written the same way, restricting full ballast rather than the boats themselves. So when you see "wake boat ordinance" in a headline, it usually means no enhanced wakes — not no wake boats.
Two honest caveats: a V-drive inboard still pushes real thrust downward, so shallow bays deserve care from any boat. And an "empty" ballast tank generally isn't dry.
Ballast tanks and invasive species
This is where wake boat owners can do something nobody else on the lake can, because nobody else has ballast tanks.
Our three lakes are one connected system. Church Pine flows into Round, Round into Big, Big out to Horse Creek. Anything introduced at one landing reaches all three. There is no containing an introduction to one basin and no undoing one.
Draining is required by law and it is not sufficient. Ballast systems on many wake boats aren't engineered to fully drain — roughly five gallons commonly remains. That residual water is exactly where the organisms that matter live: zebra mussel veligers, spiny water flea, starry stonewort fragments. All microscopic or nearly so, all invisible in a bilge. If your boat has only ever been on this chain, this is a non-issue. If you trailer between lakes, it matters a great deal.
What Wisconsin law requires before leaving any landing
- Inspect the boat, trailer, and equipment
- Remove all mud, plants, and attached animals
- Drain all water — motor, livewell, bilge, and ballast tanks — plugs out
- Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash
- Never move live fish away from a waterbody
What actually decontaminates a ballast system
Draining is the legal floor. This is the effective version, per WI DNR guidance:
- Drain on an incline. Positioning the boat on a slope removes substantially more than draining on the flat.
- Pull the bags if you can. On boats with accessible soft ballast bags, remove and drain them directly — the most complete option available to an owner.
- Hot water flush. Low-flow hot water at 120°F, run into and out of the ballast system for 3–5 minutes, or per your owner's manual. This is the step that kills what draining leaves behind.
- Rinse the exterior with high-pressure hot water at 140°F.
- Rinse interior components with low-pressure hot water at 120°F.
- Dry, if you have time. Slower than a flush, and free.
- Skip the chemicals. DNR advises against chemical decontamination — equipment damage risk plus the discharge problem.
Free tip: if you're hitting several lakes, do the clean ones first and known-infested waters last. Order of operations costs nothing.
If you want to surf
- Use the suggested area on Big Lake. It's mapped where the water is deepest and farthest from shorelines, docks, and moored boats.
- Depth first, always. The turbulence that resuspends sediment goes down, not out.
- Vary your track. Moving your line spreads the energy. Free, and it works.
- Drop ballast on the way in.
- Consider a bigger lake for surf days. Larger water exists within a reasonable tow. Check two things first: whether the destination has its own ordinance — a growing number of Wisconsin lakes do — and decontamination before you come back.
- Think about time of day. Early morning and evening put your wake into the busiest shoreline hours. Midday is usually easier on everyone, including you.
There are not many wake boats on this chain. That's precisely why this can still be a conversation between neighbors.
